The gift is alone

This work is based on Fιlicien Challaye’s photograph taken from “Le Japon illustrι” and on a Roland Barthes’ text. The video remediates a photograph in which a gift is being offered and accepted. By replacing one of the two Japanese women of the original photo by a Westerner, the offering and acceptance of the gift becomes a fragile process, as the two civilizations meet, especially after globalization and the World War II experience.
